I believe the link between being a missional church (in substance) and good works is quite direct. In order to do a good work that benefits someone else, we need to be engaged enough in their lives to understand their particular spiritual and material needs. This works on both an individual and a community level.

I think you can focus on doing good works and end up looking missional to people who wish to categorize, or focus on being missional and end up doing many good works in the process. Either approach can be defensible, I think, if it is initiated by a passion for gospel-centric living.

So true!...as a once-post-modern groupie, i remember how the good works of a church would provide not only a tangible credibility of its faith (since my natural self lived by sight, not by faith), but also created a casual environment of participation in which I could hear testimonies and the word of God, and to consider the thoughts and beliefs of the participants motivated by faith while doing good together.
